Chemicical Dating

Tonight at Solid Rock Youth, our student ministry, we had a special guest. We invited Bill Davenport, the director of the Valley Care Pregnancy Center, to join us. Bill spoke about the chemical changes which take place in our brains as we 'fall in love.' The small group time afterwards was great! Who knew that oxytocin was so interesting?

Frog and Toad

Frog and Toad TogetherCaleb and I were reading his book for school. It's the first chapter book he's brought home. Sharalyn, who remembers literally everything from when she was a child, read it before. The title is 'Frog and Toad Together.'

In the first chapter, Toad had a list of things to do for the day. He's a list person [er.. Toad]. Sharalyn laughed at me, saying that I'm like him. Probably true.

I cringed when the wind blew Toad's list away. I empathized when he said - "my list is blowing away. What shall I do without my list? ... running after my list is not one of the things that I wrote on my list of things to do!'

Yard Events

I've discovered that fund raising doesn't have to be that hard if you find a thing that people need or don't need. The last two Saturday mornings we've been doing yard work. Every spring everyone needs to clean their yard - some people are quite happy to have someone else do it and to pay them. That was revelation number one. Revelation number two has been that if you ask them, most people have many things around their homes that they do not want or need. They are happy to give these things to you for a yard sale. Now all we have to do is create some organization to the things on Saturday morning. These two fund raising efforts may become annual events for our student ministry summer mission trips.

Service Project / Fund Raiser / Team Building

This morning we had an event - we raked leaves. Our mission team plus some other students raked leaves at four homes. In one way this was a service project - the homes we went to really needed out help. In another way this was a fun raiser - people whose leaves we raked made a donation to our team. In yet another way it was a fun team building exercise. Not a bad event all told. We're doing it again next Saturday morning.

A New Blog

I've been thinking for a while about blogging. We have a family blog [dixonfamily.ca] but there are lots of times that I want to write about ministry, etc. and the things I want to say don't fit there. So this is something new. Later I'll talk about the name - for those who know me, its not a surprise.
